What is USC1994® exosome technology?
Exosomes are ultra-small nano-vesicles (50-150nm) secreted by cells to communicate with one another. USC1994® is a proprietary exosome technology derived from umbilical cord blood stem cell conditioned media - the youngest stem cell source with the strongest proliferative capacity in the human body, according to research published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry (2011).
How do exosomes act on the skin?
In 2017, the research group of Kim YJ et al. published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications the first study in the world demonstrating that exosomes from umbilical cord blood stem cell conditioned media (USC-CM Exos) are able to penetrate directly into human skin. Upon reaching the dermis, the exosomes stimulate fibroblasts to produce Collagen Type I, III, IV, Fibronectin and Elastin - the structural proteins that determine skin firmness and elasticity.
Why are umbilical cord blood exosomes superior?
According to comparative research, umbilical cord blood stem cells produce roughly 14 times more exosomes than stem cells from adult adipose tissue or bone marrow. USC1994® exosomes (50-150nm) are also considerably smaller - only about 1/1700 of the diameter of a pore - allowing fast, deep penetration without the need for aggressive invasive procedures.
Demonstrated anti-inflammatory action
In 2020, a study in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy confirmed that USC-CM is able to suppress the main inflammatory mediators in skin: TARC, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α. This explains why products containing USC1994® are often applied in recovery protocols after laser or microneedling - where the inflammatory response is the primary driver of redness, swelling and extended downtime.
